Tristec GTO - Ferrari 288 GTO Recreation: A Unique Journey Across Continents

The Story Behind the Car

When the legendary Ferrari 288 GTO was released in 1984, its limited production and motorsport pedigree quickly made it one of the world's most coveted supercars. For most enthusiasts, owning an original 288 GTO remains a dream. However, a handful of visionaries found a way to bring that dream closer to reality. My car is one of those rare creations-a Ferrari 288 GTO Recreation, expertly built by Jim Carpenter and his renowned company, Italian Design & Racing.

Jim Carpenter's recreations are celebrated as the most faithful and desirable 288 GTO replicas ever made. This particular example is one of the first eleven cars constructed, using original Ferrari 288 GTO parts at a time when they were still available. Each of these early cars was a bespoke project, tailored to the customer's exact specifications, and built with an obsessive attention to detail that sets them apart from any other replica.[1][3][4]

Purchased from a Motorsport Legend: Ash Marshall

What makes my car's story even more special is its provenance. I acquired the car from Ash Marshall, a true legend in both the Australian and international motorsport scenes. Ash Marshall was a pioneering figure in Australian drag racing, best known as the first Australian to break the 200 mph barrier in early 1969 at Sydney International Dragway, driving his famous "Scorcher" dragster. His showmanship and business acumen elevated the public profile of drag racing in Australia, and he became a household name among motorsport enthusiasts.

Beyond his racing exploits, Ash was also a prominent car dealer, specializing in importing and selling luxury and performance vehicles-a passion that eventually took him from Australia to Europe and then to the United States, where he continued to trade in exotic cars for high-profile clients. His deep involvement in both racing and the automotive business adds a unique layer of history and distinction to my Ferrari 288 GTO Recreation.[5][6]

From California to the United Kingdom

My GTO Recreation began its life in California, where it was imported from Los Angeles via Schumacher Shipping. It arrived at the Isle of Grain in the UK-a major gateway for classic and exotic cars. I personally collected the car from the port and drove it north to Newcastle, marking its first grand tour on British roads.

Gumball 3000 Rally 2005

The car's story took an exciting turn in 2005 when I entered it into the world-famous Gumball 3000 rally. Starting in London and finishing in Monte Carlo, the rally traversed some of Europe's most iconic cities and roads. My Ferrari 288 GTO Recreation was not only a head-turner among the supercar elite but also earned a spot in the official Gumball 3000 Top Trumps card pack-a testament to its uniqueness and appeal.
